Abstract

This research paper comprehends the pragmatics in the poem “Nahj ul Burda” written by Ahmad Shauqi. This study applies a pragmatic lens to Ahmad Shauqi's panegyric "Nahj ul Burda," exploring how the poet utilizes contextual and deliberative mechanisms to construct meaning and achieve rhetorical impact. The research situates the poem within the rich tradition of Arabic praise poetry, specifically investigating its relationship with its famed predecessor, Imam al-Busiri's "Al-Burda." This research adopts a qualitative descriptive-analytical approach. It examines the poem through key pragmatic frameworks, including context, background knowledge, and speech act theory, to analyze the internal structure of the text and its connection to communicative elements. The analysis reveals that "Nahj ul Burda" is deeply intertextual with al-Busiri's original, drawing inspiration and sharing numerous characteristics without contradiction. The findings indicate that Shauqi's pragmatic use of language results in a poem with a profound message, fresh stylistic expression, a genuine portrayal of reality, and a powerful, enduring intellectual impact.  The study highlights the efficacy of pragmatic analysis in uncovering the depth of modern Arabic poetry and its dialogic relationship with classical texts. It suggests that further research could apply similar pragmatic models to other neo-classical Arabic poems to better understand the evolution of stylistic and rhetorical strategies in modern literary contexts.
