This paper explores the critical approaches adopted by Syrian critics in analyzing the art of the short story, highlighting the diversity and evolution of their critical methodologies. The research employs a descriptive-analytical and comparative approach, combining textual analysis of Syrian critical writings with an evaluation of their theoretical underpinnings. Rather than relying solely on critics’ self-reported methodologies. Findings reveal that Syrian criticism of the short story in the 1990s was characterized by methodological plurality and partial assimilation of Western literary theories. The study recommends greater methodological coherence in contemporary Syrian literary criticism and encourages critics to integrate contextual, structural, and cultural approaches for a more balanced understanding of the short story form. It also calls for renewed scholarly engagement with the theoretical foundations of Arabic literary criticism in light of global critical developments.
