The Characteristics of the Modern Female Poetic Ego: A Comparative Psychological Critique of Rawda Al-Hajj and Forough Farrokhzad

Abstract

The concept of the "poetic ego" refers to the unique poetic identity that distinguishes a poet in their creative expression. In modern literature, the poetic ego has undergone various transformations, particularly with the emergence of psychological theories by Sigmund Freud and literary movements such as Romanticism, Symbolism, and Existentialism. This study explores the characteristics of the modern female poetic ego by comparing the works of the Sudanese poet Rawda Al-Hajj and the Iranian poet Forough Farrokhzad.

The research investigates how these poets' works reflect the evolution of the poetic ego into a distinctly feminine voice. While Rawda Al-Hajj adheres to classical poetic forms imbued with modern sensibilities, retaining elements of traditional values, Farrokhzad's poetry is marked by rebellion against societal norms, reflecting a bold and unfiltered exploration of feminine identity. This comparative psychological study analyzes the interplay of literary and psychological dynamics, focusing on the poets' depiction of love, identity, motherhood, and societal constraints.

The findings reveal the coexistence of traditional and modern elements in the female poetic ego, with Hajj’s work emphasizing resilience within boundaries and Farrokhzad’s embracing vulnerability and defiance. By contrasting these two voices, the study sheds light on the complexity of the female poetic ego in the modern era and its psychological and cultural implications.
