THE ROLE OF NAZM AND CONTEXT IN AMIN AHSAN ISLAHI’S TAFSIR AND THEIR IMPACT ON QUR’ANIC INDEFINITENESS IN TABBUR-E-QUR’ĀN

Abstract

This study examines Amin Ahsan Islahi’s (1904–1997) concept of Nazm as a governing structural principle of Qur’anic coherence and its intrinsic relationship with context in determining the semantic functions of indefiniteness (tankīr) in Tadabbur-e-Qur’ān. The research is grounded in the premise that Nazm cannot be understood independently of contextual indicators, and that lexical meaning emerges through syntagmatic position within the unified structure of discourse. Employing descriptive and analytical methodologies, the study demonstrates that Islahi adopts Nazm as a decisive criterion for excluding contextually detached interpretations and for affirming the Qur’an as an integrated, purposive system. The findings reveal that Islahi treats indefiniteness not as a fixed grammatical category but as a dynamic, context-driven semantic phenomenon, in which magnification constitutes the dominant function alongside other values such as minimization, generalization, multiplicity, disparagement, gradation, and deterrence. Applied analyses illustrate how meaning is generated through the interaction of lexical choice, textual position, and structural coherence, as exemplified by the magnifying sense of maʿād, the disparaging sense of qawm, and the multiplicity implied in kalima. The study concludes that nazm and context form an inseparable interpretive framework in Islahi’s exegetical methodology, rendering contextual tankīr a central tool for uncovering Qur’anic meaning.
