The Role of Nazm and context in Amin Ahsan Islahi’s Tafsir and their Impact on Qur’anic Indefiniteness in Tabbur-e-Qur’ān

This study examines Amin Ahsan Islahi’s (1904–1997) concept of Nazm—the coherent structural organization of the Qur’anic text—and its essential interplay with contextual indicators in determining the semantic functions of indefiniteness (tankīr) in Tadabbur-e-Qur’ān. The research is grounded in the premise that Nazm cannot be understood independently of context and that the true meaning of any lexical unit emerges only through its syntagmatic position and its connection to the larger structural unity of the discourse. Islahi rigorously adopts this principle, employing Nazm as a criterion for eliminating contextually detached interpretations and affirming the Qur’an as an integrated system whose parts mutually reinforce a single, purposive meaning. The study demonstrates that Islahi treats indefiniteness not as a fixed grammatical category but as a dynamic, context-driven semantic phenomenon. While magnification appears as the dominant value of tankīr, other contextual functions—such as minimization, generalization, multiplicity, disparagement, gradation, and deterrence—also emerge. Applied analyses illustrate how meanings develop from the interaction between lexical choice, textual position, and structural coherence, exemplified by the magnifying nuance of ma‘ād, the disparaging nuance of qawm, and the multiplicity implied in kalima. The research is organized into three main axes: the first outlines the concepts of tankīr, Nazm, and contextual theory; the second analyzes Islahi’s conception of Nazm in light of positional context within Tadabbur-e-Qur’ān; and the third investigates the impact of Nazm on determining the contextual meanings of indefiniteness. The study concludes that nazm and context form an inseparable interpretive framework in Islahi’s methodology, making contextual tankīr a central tool in unveiling Qur’anic meanin.
