Abstract

This research papers comprehends the precise phonetics of the Holy Qur'an (ʿIlm al-Ashkāl or al-Makhārij) which is a fundamental discipline for its correct recitation (Tajwīd). This study investigates the common phonetic mistakes made by Pāshtūn students at the International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI) during their recitation, using Sūrat Al-Bayyinah as a case study. This research employs a descriptive and analytical approach. The analysis reveals that Pāshtūn students frequently make specific phonetic errors, primarily due to the interference of their native Pashto phonological system. These mistakes are systematically documented and categorized, highlighting the Arabic phonemes and Tajwīd rules that present the most significant challenge for this linguistic group. The findings underscore the need for targeted pedagogical strategies in Qur'anic education for non-native Arabic speakers. It is recommended that Tajwīd instruction for Pāshtūn students incorporate contrastive phonetic drills focusing on the specific articulation points where Arabic and Pashto differ, to mitigate the influence of their first language and improve recitation accuracy.
