The Role of Literary Translation in Bridging Communication between Arab and Urdu Cultures: A Study of the Arabic Translation of the Poetry of Allama Muhammad Iqbal

This research paper investigates a pivotal dimension in the construction of communicative bridges between Arab and Urdu civilizations, specifically examining the role of literary translation, as a contemporary communicative mechanism, in fostering cultural synthesis. The study explores how the rendering of Pakistani poetic works from Urdu into Arabic has served to link these two cultural spheres. This trend is particularly evident in the reception of major Pakistani literary figures whose translated reach has, in many instances, surpassed that of global literary icons. Central to this discourse is the prolific and qualitative translation movement surrounding the works of the eminent Pakistani poet, Muhammad Iqbal. While his oeuvre has been translated into most world languages, its extensive presence in Arabic has established him as one of the most historically prominent international poets within Arabic academic research. This "poetic migration" from Urdu to Arabic is a direct testament to the power of translation in forging indissoluble linguistic and cultural bonds.Building upon this foundation, the research attempts to evaluate the primary translatory efforts of Pakistani poetry into Arabic and analyze their role in integrating Urdu poetic models into the Arabic critical and academic landscape. Utilizing the translation of Muhammad Iqbal’s poetry as a primary model for study, the research addresses a fundamental problem: the definitive role of literary translation in facilitating communication between the Arabic and Urdu languages. Furthermore, it seeks to identify the specific translatory endeavors that distinguished Muhammad Iqbal’s reception in the Arab world. To address these questions, the study employs a historical-survey methodology to map the trajectory of past translation experiences and Arab-Pakistani cultural relations. This is complemented by an analytical approach to provide a critical reading of the translations of Iqbal’s poetry as executed by leading Arab translators
