Poetic Evidence and Its Role in Guiding Grammatical Issues in Maʿārif al-Sunan by Yusuf al-Banūrī

This article examines the poetic evidence cited by Shaykh Yusuf al-Banūrī in his book Maʿārif al-Sunan and analyzes its role in guiding grammatical issues related to the interpretation of Prophetic traditions. The study aims to highlight al-Banūrī’s methodology in employing Arabic poetry to clarify grammatical rules and interpret linguistic structures found in hadith texts. The research adopts an analytical approach by tracing the poetic citations in the book, analyzing them, and explaining their grammatical significance. The study is structured into three main sections: the first discusses the importance of poetic evidence in Arabic grammatical studies and its relationship to understanding religious texts; the second presents selected examples of grammatical poetic evidence cited by al-Banūrī in Maʿārif al-Sunan with analysis and explanation; and the third explores the scholarly value of these poetic citations and their impact on guiding both the linguistic and juristic understanding of hadith texts. The study concludes that poetic evidence plays a significant role in clarifying grammatical principles and interpreting linguistic meanings within hadith literature, and that al-Banūrī effectively utilized such evidence to support linguistic and interpretive analysis in his commentary.
